Answers to some common questions

Transportation

On our small group tours we go places where big tour busses cannot come.

Preparation

Travel light to go further. We'll do a bit of walking to avoid the crowds. It's worth it!

What to Bring

Holland can be windy. Windmills love that; some people don't. Bring a wind proof jacket.

FAQs about our Private Tour

We can pick you up at any hotel in Amsterdam. Most major hotels in Amsterdam are listed in our booking form. If it’s not, just let us know.

A private tour just for one, or a big group with up to 16 persons: Holland Windmills can arrange it for you. According to the size of your group, we use cars or small vans that seat up to 8 passengers.

Not much: just bring a camera and wear comfortable shoes and you’ll be all set.

Our tours go to the countryside, where it’s usually a bit colder than in Amsterdam. Also, the windmill area is…well…windy. When in doubt about the weather: bring a rain jacket.

There’s no need to bring food. The Zaanse Schans has lots of shops with chocolate, cookies, coffee and tea. We stop for lunch in either Volendam, Marken, Edam or Monnickendam depending the season and the preference of the group.

We always include the highlights of Holland in the tour, like the windmills of the Zaanse Schans and small countryside villages. We can also arrange a short bike ride for you during this tour. Just let us know what you’re into and let us take care of it.

The usual destinations we take our guests are: De Zaanse Schans (1hr.30min), a Cheese Farm with cheese tasting (45min), Volendam; walk along the dike and old center/fish tasting (30min), drive through Monnickendam, lunch in Marken (45min/1hr), drive through countryside passing villages Uitdam en Zuiderwoude, Broek in Waterland (25min), drive along the Nieuwendammerdijk in the North of Amsterdam (10min).

Entrance to a windmill is always included. There are no other attractions or musea included.

Some of us are morning persons, some get alive when the sun sets. We get that! If you want to start this tour an hour earlier or later, no problem. And yes, we know where to get good coffee.

Driving from your hotel in Amsterdam to Zaanse Schans windmills takes half an hour. Driving time to the cheese farm near Edam is about 20 minutes.

From there it’s just 10 minutes to Volendam. On to Marken through Monnickendam is approximately 30 minutes. From Marken to the little countryside villages takes about 20 minutes. Driving time back to Amsterdam (together with a ride along the Nieuwendammerdijk) is about 20 minutes and back to your hotel is another 20 minutes.

All in all this tour has 2,5 hours driving time, with the best views Holland has to offer. We use countryside roads and avoid highways, so on this tour you’ll see farms, lots of cows, birds, horses and goats, green fields and the famous Dutch skies.

All our guides are licensed tourist drivers. We drive very slow – nobody ever got car sick with us.

Our booking system accepts all mayor creditcards. We also can arrange a tour with cash payment. Just give us a call or drop us a line.

Safety first

Amsterdam is one of the safest cities in Europe with very low crime. However, always keep an eye on your belongings, especially in busy areas like Central Station.

We are the only tour company in Amsterdam where the guides are also certified taxi drivers. This means we passed the strict Dutch driving exams for public transport. We don’t like to rush and drive very comfortably: no guest ever got car sick with us…we make sure you’re safe and comfortable.

Nothing: relax and let us take care of you!
